Frankly, the authors need to attend a session on Feminism and healthy relationships. One or both of the lead characters should be ridiculously wealthy to add flare to the relationship and, oh, sex is a must. Overprotective, jealous boyfriends are ‘nakakakilig’, simply because they are good looking. It plants bad perceptions in the minds of wide-eyed teens who don’t know better. The portrayal of these elements in a sweet, romantic light for young readers is damaging. It feels like reading a short story made by a second grader.įinally, I would like to attack the themes usually shown in Wattpad: sex, money, physical attractiveness and immature, bordering on unhealthy, relationships. Most of the authors claim to be in their high school or college years, but it doesn’t show. The improper spelling and headache-inducing sentence structures can bring tears to the eyes of any well-read individual. Any Filipino teacher would cry in shame upon reading the first few lines of a Wattpad story. ![]() Please… don’t even get me started on the grammar. Don’t forget their dramatic and angsty backstories. It is a vicious cycle of bets, rich playboys/bad boys/cool boys and, of course, the bubbly/ditzy/perfect Mary Sue of a heroine. The sequence of events follows the many stories before it, only with a few variations here and there. The characters are the same, only with different names. With each story you go through, your brain cells die and the plot is just another repetition of the last one. Reading Wattpad is like slamming your head on the wall over and over. ![]() ![]() I have a serious problem with its content and format. I am here to attack one example of romantic literary work gone wrong: Filipino Wattpad stories, specifically the ones about love. Young adults are easily trapped by these meaningless books their authors have dared to call ‘romance’, and I will not stand by as my generation’s brain cells die. Bookshelves are filled with unrealistic, cliché teen chic novels and the occasional poor excuse of an erotica (Fifty Shades, anyone?). I n this modern literary age, stories are becoming more shallow and trashy.
